Getting and Giving Help: Mailing Lists

Announcements

There is a low-volume mailing list for announcements of new versions of GPSBabel. This is a moderated list and only the GPSBabel developers can post to it. Joining is an easy way to see what's new.

General Discussion, questions, and Help

Additionally, there is a mailing list for general discussion, questions, and help. There is moderate volume on this list (about 100 messages a month) and this is the best place to get answers or help using GPSBabel.

NOTE: When asking a question, please include enough information to let us help you. Be sure to include version numbers, the name of the operating system, and details of any programs or hardware involved. If you're having a problem, describe it in enough detail that someone else can reproduce it. Include any needed data files. If they're more than a few kilobytes, please try simplifying the data first. (We really don't need 50,000 trackpoints to reproduce a crash or see if we support a file when 10 will do...) Of course, if you're reporting something that is large and does require a huge data set to reproduce it, please put it on a personal web site or use something like http://drop.io to share the file.

Joining this list to ask a question without enough steps to reproduce the problem you're observing is frustrating for everyone involved. PLEASE provide data and reproduction cases when asking for help.

This is a subscriber-only list; you must join in order to post to it as we've been overrun with evil spammers. List confirmation is normally quick, though there may sometime be delays of up to a few hours before you can post. You can configure your received message options in a variety of ways.

Development Discussions

There is a list for development discussion on GPSBabel. This is where the programmers fix problems, have design and implementation decisions, and post code for review and integration by the programmers responsible for GPSBabel. Even if you're not a bit-slinger yourself, it can be educational and sometimes entertaining.
